I was involved in environmental groups from the early ’70s (we were a small town “environmental group” before “green” had been invented). If only we’d had the web back then we could have built and used resources like this to help put our message across.

As it was, we had to make do with starting our own bottle recycling project, collecting bottles from the town centre pubs every Sunday morning, hoping to shame the town council into starting their own recycling service. They ignored us of course, saying it was “a nice idea but too expensive”. Thirty years later they’re introducing a scheme to fine people who don’t recycle. Twats.

The Breathing Earth map is a beautiful way of showing something very ugly, like a musical plane crash .
